Prime Minister Scott Morrison says schools “must remain open” until the end of the term despite the Victorian government bringing the state’s term to an end four days early.
After an emergency meeting with the National Cabinet, the prime minister announced “children should go to school tomorrow,” but said parents are open to keep their children from attending classes.
“If you choose to keep your child at home, you are responsible for the conduct and behaviour of your children,” the prime minister said.
Mr Morrison said the decision allows parents into the end of the school term to “be able to keep their children home where they choose to”.
“The decisions that parents make that we all make over the course of the next few weeks in particular could very seriously determine the trajectory that Australia continues to go in relation to the coronavirus”.
For parents who decide to keep their children at school “for an education,” then schools will remain open.
“I don’t want to see our children lose an entire year of their education that’s what we’re talking about here”.
