(4 Jan 2021) The first Southern California health care worker to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine lined up again to receive her second dose despite a slow nationwide start to vaccination efforts.
Intensive care unit nurse Helen Cordova, who received her first shot three weeks ago, joined other doctors and nurses for their second injections.
"I was definitely one of those people that did not want to receive the vaccine initially," she said. "And so my message had always been- you know- go and do your research because that's what I ended up doing and that's what changed my stance on the vaccine."
The hospital expects to receive additional doses this week and expand its distribution plans to outside healthcare workers.
The vaccine was sent to hospitals and other sites across the country that can store it at extremely low temperatures — about 94 degrees below zero. Pfizer is using containers with dry ice and GPS-enabled sensors to ensure each shipment stays colder.
Los Angeles County, which has a quarter of the state's 40 million residents, has had 40% of the deaths in California, the third state to reach the 25,000 death count. New York has had nearly 38,000 deaths, and Texas has had more than 27,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
