The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has launched its 2020 Islamic Philanthropy Report, highlighting the impact of their Refugee Zakat Fund, which received a total of $43,165 million in 2019, allowing UNHCR to support 191,497 refugees and internally displaced families in 2019.

Furthermore, 99% of the Fund’s contributions came from generous donors in the MENA region, notably from the GCC. This includes the UAE, which contributed the largest digital donations, making up 41.7% of the total funds collected in 2019.

These donations helped UNHCR to support 191,497 (1,025,014 individuals) vulnerable families across the worldwide including refugees and internally displaced peoples in Bangladesh, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Malaysia, Egypt and Mauritania. This assistance has helped beneficiaries to address basic needs such as shelter, food, education, and healthcare, as well as debt repayment, mainly through cash assistance.
