A flock of American Avocets takes flight on Klopp Lake. Unlike the other shorebirds on Humboldt Bay, avocets prefer to swim rather than to shelter on islands, levees or in salt marsh grasses as the shifting tide floods their feeding grounds in the mudflats. They are no less vulnerable to attacks from harriers and falcons, however, and will take to the air as a flock when they perceive a threat.
