I like to think of spearfishing while freediving as a highly respectful, almost spiritual way to obtain food. It allows us to supplement the food we buy from a market - where you can’t always trace the source or even trust what’s on the label - with something we caught ourselves, on a single breath-hold, knowing exactly where it came from, knowing there was no bycatch or cruelty involved in getting it from the ocean to our plates.
We target only species with healthy populations, only during the permitted seasons. We only select individuals that are within the minimum and maximum size limits. We try to wait for the exact moment when we can make the best shot to ensure our catch experiences minimal suffering. We take only enough to reasonably feed ourselves, and perhaps a few friends (if we are lucky). We honor and appreciate each and every animal for sustaining and nourishing us. For me, the experience of spearfishing while freediving provides an intimate connection with and deep respect for what I eat. 🐟💙
