In the 1st chapter of his CONFESSIONS, Augustine famously prayed, "Our hearts are restless until they find rest in You, Lord!" Though raised by a faithful mother who taught Him the Bible and the Christian faith, in his early years he pursued his restless heart's worldly desires. However his stoney heart started to crumble under the powerful preaching of Ambrose, til one day while sitting under a tree he heard a child from a nearby house say "Tolle lege!" (take up and read). So, Augustine, taking this as from the Lord, found a Bible and read "Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts" (Rom 13:13-14). God took the hammer of His Word to break Augustine's heart of stone (Jer 23:29), as Augustine understood the Gospel and believed in Christ. Join us tonight for our continued study of "Church History,pt7" and this last look at the early church fathers, focusing on Augustine & Chrysostom!
