MTV hated the original 'Revelate' video but still had to play it on their Irish channel because people loved it so much. No Disco of course played it loads too. Then ZTT records signed The Frames and decided it would be a good idea to gloss it up and remake it. Classic record company stuff really. The three of us who had the original (Donal Scannell, David Crann and Niamh Guckian) were hired for another glossier go. We extrapolated and built on the original concept. WE even reshot bits in the original location on the same security camera but to no avail. The band hated it. I think they still do. They probably hated it regardless of what it looked like because the very idea of making it kinda sucked. Having said that, I (donal) really enjoyed working on it for loads of reasons, one of the main ones being that it was the only time I got to work with the late great cameraman Harry Purdue who was a funny gent taken far too soon. Harry not only shot it but hooked us with loads of his mates. This video remains the most expensive I've ever worked on - we had a big truck that just carried a generator and all. If anything this video is a monument to record label excess. The fact that it failed to eclipse the £2 version is perfect really. I still love it though and watching it still makes me smile especially Dave Odlum's scenes - he's the bleached blond white coat dude who used to play guitar in The Frames and now produces full time.
