Barry X Ball is a sculptor from New York who works primarily in precious stones using the help of 3D scanning technologies and CNC milling machines, then finely crafting his sculptures by hand over thousands of hours.
Ball's work has consisted mainly of two series throughout his career, his Portraits and his Masterpieces. In Portraits, he takes life casts of his own face, his friends, and his colleagues, and creates emotive sculptures from stones like Belgian Black Marble that examine themes like doubling, stretching of the skin, and doppelgängers. In Masterpieces, Ball recreates works from ancient, Renaissance, and Baroque artists like Michelangelo and Antonio Corradini, re-imagining their sculptures by carving them in translucent and veiny material like Iranian onyx, Pakistani onyx, Mexican onyx and honeycomb calcite.
