Omiš is a small town and port at the mouth of the Cetina River, around 26 km southeast of Split.
In the 13th and 14th century Omiš was home to pirates (Omiški gusari) who were accustomed to attacking trade ships at the mouth of the River Cetina. After each successful attack, the pirates would retreat up the Cetina river, preventing the trade ships and their escorts from following them.
In this period, the Omiš Pirate was the most feared along the Adriatic coast. Trade republics, such as Venice or Dubrovnik, made non-attacking agreements with them. The Republic of Venice and the Pope tried to put an end to the Omiš pirates once and for all by sending crusaders. The pirates defeated them the first time around. However, Venice put an end to the Pirates of Omiš at the second attempt.
After this, Omiš became part of the Bosnian Kingdom and was later sold to the Venetian republic. Upon the fall of the Venetian republic, Omiš became a part of the Austrian Empire and stayed under Austrian rulership until WWI apart from a 10-year period at the beginning of the 19th century when Omiš was under French rulership.
As this video shows, walking through the Old Town streets of Omiš when darkness falls makes for a thrilling experience.
