The Pillars of Ashoka's Regret
In the 3rd century BCE, one of the most powerful emperors of India, King Ashoka, waged ruthless wars to expand his territory. However, after witnessing the loss of countless innocent lives in the Kalinga War, he was overcome with deep remorse. This experience marked the beginning of a major transformation in Ashoka’s life.
Ashoka abandoned his warrior identity and embraced Buddhism’s teachings of peace and morality. He decided to spread Buddhism across his kingdom and implemented various reforms to teach his people about peace. Additionally, he erected enormous stone pillars known as the “Ashoka Pillars.” These pillars, inscribed with moral advice and messages of peace, symbolized his regret and his responsibility towards his people.
Today, the Ashoka Pillars, found across various parts of India, are revered historical monuments that bear witness to his journey from a warrior king to a wise leader.
