Researchers employed SLAC's high-intensity X-ray laser to examine molten rock under extreme pressures, simulating conditions found in Earth's core-mantle boundary and the interiors of super-Earths. Unexpectedly, they discovered that iron content does not significantly influence the density of molten rock, a finding that challenges existing models of Earth's formation. Furthermore, the research suggests that atomic compression within the magma oceans of super-Earths may lead to divergent evolutionary paths compared to smaller rocky planets. This study underscores the power of advanced X-ray techniques in elucidating the complexities of Earth's deep interior and exoplanetary structures, opening new avenues for research in Earth and planetary sciences.
