I wanted to bring you an updated version of this piece, for a few reasons. Firstly, you wanted more Bach! Secondly, we felt we could record a better performance of this now than in 2012 when the original video was posted. Thirdly, while we were visiting Hindhead Music Centre to shoot the Air video, I was reminded of learning this piece with my first teacher, quite possibly in this room, where I had my lessons when the concert hall featured in Air wasn't available. For many years this part of the house was private to all but my teacher's harp pupils and so it has a wonderful secrecy to it that I always enjoyed. In later years when I became a teacher at HMC I sometimes gave lessons in this room and somehow that always seemed very special to me, like I was letting my kid pupils in on a secret that only harpists were allowed to know! I actually took a photo of the sign I put up on the front door the first time I had to teach there just saying "Amy is teaching in the drawing room today!" It sounds so dumb but I was really excited about it. It was like passing on my heritage.
What can I say about this piece. It's just a masterful show of a journey through harmony. I love that the repetition of rhythm/shape throughout not only gives the modulations a chance to be the star, but the simplicity of the piece also gives each performer a chance to put their mark on it. No two performers will play this piece the same, as there's so much scope to just... enjoy it and let your "youness" seep into the music. Someone could make a very interesting study of analysing a bunch of musicians playing this. I'd love to hear the results.
Hindhead Music Centre is a music tuition centre in Surrey, UK. I studied there for 11 years with Ann Hughes-Chamberlain, who founded the school. It is a magical and special place and I highly recommend their summer schools even if you're not local...!
