The Toyota bZ4X gets its name from a class of cars Toyota has called Beyond Zero, namely electric. It is the Japanese manufacturer's first all-electric car, even though it has led the field with electric Hybrid plugins for a number of years. The BZ4X offers exceptional levels of comfort and for drivers the BZ4X’s dynamic abilities will deliver a good amount of fun on the road.
Although not the cheapest family EV available, the BZ4X is well equipped and has a premium feel throughout, with enough practical touches and onboard tech to compete with close rivals. A smart and sophisticated exterior look adds to its appeal, while Toyota’s reassuring 10-year warranty package could be cherry on the cake that wins customers over.
Buyers will most likely choose the cheaper single-motor front wheel drive only option, because it offers 277 miles of range compared with the AWD’s 257 miles. The FWD utilises a 201bhp electric motor on the front axle, instead of the 215bhp AWD, and as a result it’s only 0.6 seconds slower to 62mph, at 7.5 seconds. The FWD is also 85kg lighter than the dual-motor option.
Even the entry level trim BZ4X Pure model gets 18-inch alloy wheels, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a reversing camera and various safety features including; cruise control, pre-collision avoidance assist, lane-keep assist and parking assist.
On the move the bZ4X FWD feels very similar to the AWD model. It’s exceptionally refined with no powertrain noise to speak of and literally no wind or road noise.
Rapid charging at 150kW is a welcome feature, which means you can get an 80 per cent battery charge in 32 minutes. Home charging takes around seven and a half hours to nine hours depending on your charger.
Buyers can be reassured the bZ4X will be a strong performer on the used market. Experts predict after a typical ownership period of three years or 36,000 miles, Toyota’s first all-electric car should retain an average of 54 per cent of its original value. The entry 201bhp Pure model is predicted as the pick of the range, with a figure of around 56 per cent.
