How you respond to negative feedback might just take your career to the next level. Visit [ Ссылка ] to hire Joel so he can deliver this motivational speech or training at your workplace: “The Power of Perception: Reputations Are Built on Perception.”
Keep in mind these two key points about responding to feedback:
• If you’re a strong performer or a leader, people might not give you feedback on their own because they’re afraid of rocking the boat. That’s why you need to ask for it.
• How you respond to negative feedback makes a big impression on people and can influence your career success.
For example, after two months of coaching, one client saw herself as someone who reliably got her work done, understood the big picture, and was the number one salesperson in her company.
But a 360 interview helped her better understand how others saw her.
A 360 interview is an extremely helpful way to understand how people perceive you. It involves interviewing a broad range of people throughout the organization to get feedback about your performance and personality. This includes people above and below you in the corporate hierarchy. It’s something an executive coach usually does, before reporting back to the employee on the themes that emerged.
For this client, the dominant themes included words like “blunt,” “demanding,” and “intimidating.” The client was floored—she’d had no clue that people perceived her in this way. Thus, the 360 interview was a major reality check for her. She knew that how she responded to the negative feedback would determine her success as a leader.
The challenging thing about someone who’s a high performer is that people don’t want to criticize them because they’re impacting the company in a very positive way. Regardless of their positive impact, however, they may still have a lot of room to strengthen their performance—especially in preparation for advancing into a leadership role. Daunting as it might be, a 360 interview can serve as a necessary wakeup call that ignites big changes that ultimately open new doors.
Be intentional about not going on the defensive when getting negative feedback. How you respond makes a big impression on others. It’s hard to feel critiqued by all sides at once, but take a deep breath and really listen. The 360 feedback showed this client why her team had high turnover and why some people preferred not to work closely with her, giving her the chance to start changing people’s perceptions of her. Whatever perceptions you may need to change, listening to feedback from a broad range of people can do the same for you.
