I’ve been married to Nate for four years, and while our relationship is strong, my dynamic with his mom (MIL) has always been strained. She’s obsessed with what I eat and often makes snide remarks about my portion sizes. Since I work with horses and burn a lot of calories, I eat bigger meals, but she never seems to get it.
Last week, we went to dinner with Nate's family, and I was starving after not eating all day. I ordered a large steak meant for two, which led to my MIL making passive-aggressive comments throughout the meal. I finished my food, which set her off. She accused me of "attention-seeking" and demanded that Nate and I cover the entire bill because I’d supposedly ordered too much.
Things escalated when MIL started posting passive-aggressive articles on social media about eating habits and sent me texts about portion control. She even went as far as booking me an appointment with a nutritionist, claiming it was for my own good and to keep Nate interested in me. I was furious but stood my ground, telling her I wouldn’t be going.
Despite her attempts to control my eating, Nate fully supported me, reminding me that he loves me as I am. After another run-in where she hoped I had seen the nutritionist, I decided to order a big meal in front of her at lunch just to make a point.
