Nixon --- at the time, the Republican candidate for vice president --- denies charges that he used a secret campaign fund for his personal expenses. Instead, Nixon says the only gift that he had accepted was the family dog, whom his daughters named "Checkers."

Bruce Springsteen --- the rock singer and songwriter known as "The Boss" --- is born in Freehold, New Jersey.
