Gugu grew up in a township in South Africa, where she witnessed both male and female friends being sent off to initiation school, as a rite of passage into manhood and womanhood. In her story, she remembers her own confusion and sadness upon learning of her friends’ struggles and recounts the loss of her best friend, who died out in the bush from illness and exposure. Gugu is confident that these communities can continue to value their cultural traditions, AND that they can change.
