Here's just a straightforward side-by-side-by-side shootout of the MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay, the Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail and TC Electronic Echobrain.
There is a little something going on with the MXR - maybe just a little rounding and softening of the core tone when engaged. It's a nice sound. For me - the Echobrain is a great short-delay and sounds just as good as the others and the Vapor Trail is the one I kept.
Would tap help? Maybe. a DOD Rubberneck would be fun, but I don't use analog delays for rhythmic stuff. Have a listen.
