Today, Prof Jok Madut shares his predictions of what is likely to come next in South Sudan in this interactive discussion with our regular RBC panel. While large-scale fighting has subsided since the signing of the last peace deal in 2018 in Khartoum, violence persists as several armed groups are yet to lay down their arms. The government is also still struggling to bring under control the myriad, sporadic and widespread inter-communal conflicts in the country. The cost of living has rocketed amidst chronic economic problems caused by endemic corruption, the cost of war and the international financial crisis. People await the chance to vote again as many fear that their promised democracy has been stolen. The 2018 Agreement (R-ARCSS) promises the conducting of free and fair elections at the end of the interim period, which the partners to the agreement have recently extended by two years – fuelling doubts that the government is unwilling to hand back power to the people.
