A video to demonstrate the very low quality scans the Wolverine pro film scanner produces.
I used a test film purchased from Wittner Cinetec, and scanned it on both the Wolverine and my FilmFabriek HDS+ 4K film scanner.
The Wolverine film scanner is sold as a "professional" film scanner allowing people to scan their own home movies. I always discourage people from purchasing these scanners, and to invest the money in paying to have your films scanned on a machine like the HDS as the quality is far better!
Although I scanned the test film in 4K, even if I set the HDS to 1080p mode, it's still resolving far more detail than the wolverine in 1080p (which looks a lot more like 480p)
The Wolverine scans are very compressed, having limited detail and colour. The design of the machine also leads to a very unstable image that needs to be stabilised. Most people don't realise how much detail there is in 8mm film, so they'll normally give a positive review of the wolverine - not realising how much better the film can look when scanned on a proper film scanner.
There are also plenty of people that buy the wolverine scanners to use to offer paid digitising services advertised on Facebook marketplace for peoples home movies, unfortunately the customers don't realise how poor the results will be.
