Mitchell grasses contribute significantly to the diet quality and quantity across the extensive alluvial cracking clay in the Barkly region. Several years of below average rainfall resulted in a noticeable reduction in Mitchell grass tussocks in 2022. The Rain Ready Rangelands project developed a commercial scale demonstration site in the region looking at how wet season spelling could assist Mitchell grass recovery. In this video, Caz Pettit - Senior Rangelands Research Officer with the Northern Territory Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (NT DAF) Livestock Industries, explains how the project came about and what it aims to achieve.
