The devastating 6.5-magnitude earthquake, which struck the south-western Japanese island of Kyushu, leveled more than a dozen homes, and left several people trapped underneath collapsed buildings. Nearly 900 hundred residents were injured, while tens of thousands fled from dangerous areas to seek warmth and aid from the 350 military personnel dispatched as part of the rescue effort. A second 6.4-magnitude quake hit the south-east Asian country hours after the first, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Cameras showed violent tremors in the southern city of Kumamoto during the first earthquake which was felt strongly throughout the island.
