Thomas Becket was an Archbishop of Canterbury and a key figure in 12th-century England. He was born in London in 1118 and served as the chancellor to King Henry II before being appointed as the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162. Becket was known for his vigorous defence of the rights and privileges of the Church, which often brought him into conflict with the King and other members of the royal court. His disputes with Henry II eventually led to his murder in 1170, which caused shock and outrage throughout Europe and cemented Becket's place as a martyr and symbol of the power of the Church. His legacy lives on, and he remains one of the most famous figures of medieval England.
