STORYLINE:
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Tuesday that Israel knew how to defend itself if attacked by Iraq, and would not give up its right to do so.
A defiant Sharon was speaking at a conference on Israel's economy in Israeli capital Tel Aviv.
During the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq fired 39 Scud missiles at Israeli cities, causing heavy damage but few casualties.
The missiles all carried conventional explosive warheads.
Iraqi officials - who in 1991 had threatened to attack Israel - now say they no longer have the ability to do so.

Israel's main defence against scud missiles will be the state-of- the-art Arrow, seen here in tests in January.
It's the world's first fully deployed anti-missile system and Israel says it's pleased with the results of tests like these.

Israel has also completed a second line of defence around major cities - several batteries of the shorter-range Patriot missiles.
The Patriot has been upgraded since it proved ineffectual against scud missiles in the 1991 Gulf War.
The latest battery to be deployed is here in the Tel Baruch area north of Tel Aviv.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon says Israel is now fully prepared to defend itself.
