Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site is home to three species of turtles: the Eastern painted turtle, the snapping turtle and the Blanding's turtle. There are fewer than 500 adult Blanding's turtles in Nova Scotia because young turtles are a prime target for many predators. They are also sensitive to the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation.

At Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, Parks Canada biologists track turtles with a radio transmitter attached to their shells to determine how best to protect the population. In addition, a group of volunteers has been protecting the turtles for over two decades.
