Jason Schubert of lena, Ill., 2 time champion at the annual Byron Dragway World Power Wheelstand Event in '05 and '07 was back again this year with his beautiful show car quality alcohol injected 427ci '78 Cutlass Supreme, determined to make a run for his 3rd title. Starting on saturday practicing a week before the event, Jason made some wild passes, dragging the bumper, but not being satisfied with the behavior of the car and wanting to go further ,he decided once he got home to thrash all night and fabricate a set of heavy duty wheelie wheels and incorporate them into the bumper much like last years Power Wheelstand Winner A.J. Fiorelli used. So Sunday after being up all night, Jason headed to Byron to test with Jeff Wild and his Buick Skylark Wheelstander along with A.J. Fiorelli who was there to help the guys with his expertise and advice. On Jason's first pass with the new bumper wheels, he went up too fast and came down burping the throttle wheelstanding the car up and down the track and take notice at the end, he came down hard and smashed the 100lb lead weight he had mounted in the front end to keep it down! You can see it fly off and luckily it didn't cause any major damage. If you watch the video in the beginning you can see the weight as Jason fires up the engine. You will also notice in the pit video, the rear quarter damage as the result of the violent slamming of the car to the pavement! Next pass Jason, still reeling from the first pass was unsure how the car would react without the weight. Well as luck has it, the car went up and Jason rode it out, like it was on rails with the combination of the bumper wheels and no front weight resulting in a 600ft wheelstand which was his longest ever! Jason and his crew packed it up ready for the following Sunday's contest. Sunday came and Jason pulled into Byron with confidence after the testing sessions. The weather was overcast with a threat of rain and windy. Not exactly great conditions for wheelstanding but not uncommon at Byron in October. Jason patiently waited in line in the first round as 7 cars ahead of him made their attempts. Jason took his turn with a powerful launch burping the throttle and riding it out to another personal best wheelstand of over 600ft and setting the bar for the rest of the field. After the first round Jason was clearly the longest but Brian Ambrosini was right behind him in distance and a sure threat. Second and final round Jason was up sixth with Ambrosini yet to run. Jason's first attempt fell short and he turned around to attempt another run. Leaving nothing to spare Jason unleashed his best ever wheelstand coming down hard violently at the 660ft 1/8 mile marker and bouncing up on 3 wheels heading straight for the wall. Jason made a great save but smashed the wall hard with the side of his car. Luckily Jason was ok and the car survived the crash. Jason waited and watched as Ambrosini would come up and put on an equally impressive attempt but fall a few feet short of Jason's run. Jason was declared the winner and recipient of $10,000 and the custom champion's trophy made by Dan Gardner. Jason would like to thank his family, crew and Byron Dragway.
