Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio acknowledged the failure of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act of 1989, noting that it has led to black market growth, increased crime, and the spread of dangerous liquor. While the law has seen some success in rural areas, it has been largely ineffective in urban centers. Rio emphasized the need for collective efforts from society to address the health risks of spurious liquor, including poisoning and deaths. He called for open discussions to create a healthier community, appreciating the Church's concerns on the issue.
