Rethymnon is the third largest city of Crete after Heraklion and Chania. The city has 55,000 permanent residents. Rethymno has a campus of the University of Crete. Therefore young students are a large part of the local population. In the summer months the population can grow to 100,000 with the tourists.
Rethymnon is a very nice city with an old Greco-Venetian centre and a large sandy beach (20 kilometer). Located in the old centre is the Fortezza (Fortress), the Loggia (Venetian Town Hall) and the old Venetian harbour with an elegant lighthouse. Rethymnon is also the capital of the province of Rethymnon.
