NUCLEAR POWER
Opposition leader Peter Dutton has a big plan for getting Australia's carbon emissions down and at the centre of it are two words — nuclear power. Nuclear power is essentially created by splitting uranium atoms, which generates a huge amount of energy similar to a nuclear bomb blast. Oh and while that might seem scary, nuclear power plants do this in a safer and much smaller way generating loads of electricity for people to use, without directly creating emissions. In fact, Australia is home to around one third of the world's uranium, so Peter Dutton wants to use it. He says if the Coalition gets elected, they want to build seven nuclear power plants at soon-to-be-closed coal plants around the country to help get our emissions down. But not everyone's so sure it's the solution. Nuclear power has been banned in Australia since 1998, because it's caused some huge disasters around the world, and it can produce a lot of radioactive waste, and storing it all is far from easy. Plus, Peter Dutton says the first of these plants wouldn't be ready for at least 11 years, which some reckon is too little too late and that we should be focusing on solar or wind energy. So this nuclear debate might only get more heated from here!
US GOVERNMENT SUES ADOBE
The US Government is suing the makers of Photoshop, Adobe! According to the government, Adobe makes it way too hard for users to cancel their subscriptions, and part of its cancellation policy is actually illegal. It says users are charged some hidden fees when they try to opt out of the software, something Adobe has made hundreds of millions of dollars from.
INSIDE OUT 2
Speaking of hundreds of millions of dollars, Pixar's Inside Out 2 has smashed box office records. It made more than 440 million dollars in its opening weekend, the strongest start by any animated film ever! It's been a pretty lacklustre year for movies, with ticket sales down almost 25% on this time last year.
OLYMPIC HEAT
The 2024 Paris Olympics are set to begin in July, but now there are warnings it might be too hot for athletes to compete safely, possibly the hottest on record. France experienced some serious heat waves last Summer, and as climate change continues to cause temperatures in the city to rise, athletes are getting worried. Lots of Olympic events take place outside, and competing in the heat can pose serious health risks to athletes. For example at the Tokyo Olympics, where temperatures exceeded 34 degrees, athletes vomited and fainted at finish lines, with wheelchairs deployed to carry athletes away from sun-scorched arenas. So to try and avoid that from happening again, a new report from athletes and climate scientists has listed some recommendations including, smart scheduling to avoid peak heat hours, better hydration plans, as well as collaboration between athletes and sporting bodies on climate awareness campaigns.
HOG PREDICTS WINNER OF EURO CHAMPIONSHIPS MATCH
A crystal ball is nice and all, but nothing beats Abby the red river hog at Frankfurt Zoo when it comes to seeing into the future… of soccer games, at least. Abby has a 100% success rate for predicting the winner of European Championships matches meaning she got it right the last time Germany won.
FLYING CAR TEST
I think I see one of these in your future — a flying car! This one's just been tested in China. It can fly for 25 minutes at a max speed of 128 kays an hour. And the company that created it hopes it'll be handy for short trips within a city area.
SENIOR BREAKDANCERS
And this could be you in many, many decades — a breakdancing senior citizen! These grandparents in Japan were inspired by the addition of breakdancing into the upcoming Paris Olympics, and while they aren't going for gold, these golden oldies sure are giving it a red-hot go!
