(3 Feb 2022) Hundreds of Tibetans and supporters on Thursday gathered outside the Swiss headquarters of the International Olympic Committee, protesting against China's human rights record on the day before the start of the Beijing Olympics.
Waving placards bearing messages like "Save Tibet" and "No More Bloody Games," Tibetan expatriates from across Europe sought to send a message to China's ruling Communist Party.
Behind a tiny police escort, demonstrators waving scores of Tibetan flags were joined by a handful of men in monk-like robes and about a dozen supporters of China's Muslim Uyghur minority.
China doesn't recognize the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile and accuses exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama of seeking to separate Tibet from China.
The Winter Games are attracting global controversy as they spotlight the host country's treatment of the Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities.
Human rights groups have dubbed it the "Genocide Games," as the U.S. and other countries have cited rights abuses in leading a diplomatic boycott of the event.
China denies allegations of human rights abuses, calling them the "lie of the century."
It describes its policies vis-a-vis Uyghur communities in Xinjiang as a training and education program to combat terrorism.
