WWF Wrestlefest was released in arcades back in 1991 & was the follow up to WWF Superstars, which was released in 1989. This game is by far better in almost every way compared to its predecessor. It features more characters such as Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Big Bossman, The Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase, Jake The Snake Roberts, Earthquake, Sgt. Slaughter, Mr. Perfect, Demolition Smash, Demolition Crush & unselectable characters, Legion of Doom Hawk & Legion of Doom Animal. Each wrestler has some variety of moves that they can perform. These moves vary based on the wrestler performing them & the condition of the opponent. Everyone also has their own special move. When a character is laying on the ground diagonally, that means they are weak enough for you to do your special move. Wrestlefest also features a background commentator that calls out various moves performed.
It also comes with two different modes of play, which I included in the video. The first one is a Royal Rumble match. This is played similar to a regular Royal Rumble except the rules are different. You start with six wrestlers in the ring at the same time. A wrestler can be eliminated by either, pinfall, submission, or being thrown out of the ring. When there are less than five wrestlers in the ring, a new wrestler will enter. What is cool is the pop-up picture showing who is next. They make a pose & then make their way to the ring. The second mode is Saturday Night's Main Event mode where you try to become the WWF Tag Team Champions. You pick two wrestlers or Demolition to form a tag team & beat a series of other opponents before facing The Legion of Doom Hawk & Animal. After you beat them, you then have to defend your titles against everyone else. After that, the game is over. In a couple of matches, there is also a tag team cage match, but it can only be won by pinfall or submission. You can whip your opponent into the cage though.
I love the fact that they got the likeness of the wrestlers to near perfection. They even included a few double team moves. I like fighting outside the ring, but I wish that you could move to the sides & enter there. I also wish you could exit the ring on your own without having someone thrown out first. One of the other features I like is that unlike the previous game, when a wrestler is on the apron, they gradually gain health back. If they stay on the apron long enough, they will get powered up. This will enable them to win lock ups when they are tagged in.
WWF Wrestlefest is by far my favorite arcade wrestling game. With larger characters, more wrestlers to choose from, more modes of play, a larger variety of moves, & a small attempt at commentary, you can't go wrong.
