The latest display in our Sculpture Research Library is 'The Show Must Go On: Exhibiting Sculpture by Women in Twentieth-Century Britain.'
In 1975 protesters staged a demonstration against 'The Condition of Sculpture' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, in which only four of the forty exhibiting artists were women.
Following the protest, artists Liliane Lijn, Rita Donagh, Tess Jaray, Kim Lim and Gillian Wise were invited to organise the 1978 Hayward Annual, an exhibition that was dubbed ‘the women’s show’.
Records of women's art exhibitions have largely been omitted from art historical accounts, with the exception of the 1978 Hayward Annual.
This display seeks to redress that absence and accompanies our Researching Women in Sculpture season.
