Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM)
The Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) System is last point of multi layered Defense system against aerial attack which makes it extremely critical defence system. The missile is developed by DRDO in association with BEL and Bharat Dynamics Private limited for Indian Army. QRSAM is being developed to protect the mobile armoured columns from any aerial attacks.
QRSAM latest trial
As per latest report, DRDO & Indian Army have successfully completed 6 back-to-back flight tests of Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM) system from Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, off the Odisha Coast. The flight tests have been conducted as part of evaluation trials by Indian Army. Tests were conducted against high-speed aerial targets mimicking various aerial threats to evaluate capability of weapon systems under different scenarios including long-range medium altitude, short-range high, altitude manoeuvring target and salvo launch with 2-missiles fired in quick succession.
Tested in final deployment configuration
The system performance was also evaluated under day and night operation scenarios. During these tests, all the mission objectives were met establishing pin-point accuracy of the QRSAM weapon system with state-of-the-art guidance and control algorithms including warhead chain. These tests were conducted in the final deployment configuration consisting of all indigenously developed sub-systems including the missile with indigenous RF seeker, mobile launcher, fully automated command and control system, surveillance and multi-function Radars.
The uniqueness of the QRSAM weapon system is that it can operate on the move with search and track capability & fire on short halt. This has been proven during the mobility trials conducted earlier
What makes QRSAM lethal?
QRSAM is a solid fuel propelled rocket which can be mounted on a truck making it compact and highly mobile. It typically has 6 tube launcher mounted on 8 x 8 Ashok Leyland or Tata Motors heavy mobility vehicles. The missile features 2 four walled active phase array radars providing it 360 coverage and all-round protection. It is integrated with mid-course inertial navigation system with two data link and terminal active seeker. This provides it capability to search and track its target while moving. The Laser proximity fuze ensures that missile can't be jammed.
QRSAM has an operational range between 3-30km while flight altitude between 30m-10km.
