As you get into birding, you’ll probably end up spending a lot of time searching for rare species or migrants that just show up briefly in Philadelphia on their way to somewhere else. But be sure not to neglect the birds that are always around us in the city.
They might not be super popular with birders, but house sparrows, starlings, and pigeons are three birds that were imported to North America from Europe and have thrived, particularly around our cities. They spend all year around us, they’re not very shy around people, and they make it easy to observe bird behavior and develop your birding skills right where you live.
In this #GreenFridays video, Billy helps us develop our birding skills right on our own block - 46th and Chestnut to be exact!
If you want to get more into birding in Philadelphia, be sure to check out BirdPhilly.org and find a birding walk near you. It’s a great way to learn from local birders and get connected to the birding community.
