A great looking, great sounding 6 bell and drum antique music box by Charles Paillard of Saint Croix, Switzerland, made in c. 1885.
The fully overhauled movement features six bells struck by engraved honeybee strikers, and a drum with 9 beaters. The governor is stamped “CPSC” (for Charles Paillard Saint Croix). The serial number 101895 is stamped on the left hand bracket, and dates the box to c. 1885. Both bells and drum can be disengaged at will.
The original tunesheet is very colourful and elaborate, and lists the 12 operatic airs. It plays with a very nice sound. The case is inlaid rosewood, with a beautiful musical inlay with a cartouche to the lid. It also features ormolu carrying handles to the side.
