Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time features two gameplay modes, Modern and Retro. In Modern mode, there are no lives and no game overs. You keep playing until you want to stop. In Retro mode, lives are implemented, as are game overs. Big Wumpa Fruit boxes change into 1-Up boxes, which contain both Big Wumpa Fruit and 1-Ups. Additionally, for every 100 Wumpa Fruit you collect in Retro mode, you gain a 1-Up, just like in the classic games. In Modern mode, the Wumpa Fruit counter doesn't reset, but instead keeps going up until the end of the level.

Gems have returned, but now there are 6 total in each level (at least in the demo). There is 1 for breaking all boxes, 1 that is hidden somewhere in the level, 3 are awarded for collecting a certain amount of Wumpa Fruit (indicated by a meter in the top left corner), and 1 is awarded for completing the level without dying. An article said that it's based on completing a level under a certain amount of deaths, but that wasn't clear in the demo. In any event, completing the level without dying awarded a gem.
