The Sumatran elephant, a subspecies of the Asian elephant, is found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. These gentle giants are the smallest of all the Asian elephants, with adult males standing at 8-9 feet tall and weighing up to 5,500 pounds. Sadly, habitat loss due to human encroachment, deforestation, and agricultural development, as well as poaching for their ivory tusks, have caused a significant decline in their population. It is estimated that there are fewer than 3,000 Sumatran elephants left in the wild, making them critically endangered.
