On December 12th, 2020, the Platypus Affiliated Society hosted a panel titled "After the Election: Which Way Forward for the Left?".
The 2020 presidential election in the U.S. saw the majority of the American Left place its hopes in a Biden victory, with admonitions that dissenting critical perspectives wait until after the election, when a Biden administration would arguably present greater opportunities for the Left moving forward. Yet, no clear consensus exists on the Left as to what sort, if any, of an opportunity the coming Biden years represent. Looking forward, does a Biden administration meaningfully open new opportunities for the Left? If so, what does that look like? If not, how should the Left think about our present moment and where to go from here? After 2020, which way forward for the Left?
Panelists:
- Greg Lucero (founding member of Chicago Independent Teamsters)
- Jonah Martell (Democratic Socialists of America, contributor to Cosmonaut magazine and Weekly Worker)
- Gerald Smith (Oscar Grant Committee, ex-Spartacist League, ex-Black Panther Party)
- Benjamin Studebaker (recent PhD in politics and international studies from the University of Cambridge, University and College Union (UK))
