Known as the "Gates of Hell," the Darvaza Gas Crater has long been a hot tourist spot for Turkmenistan.
The huge crater is a sight to behold, but it's also been on fire for decades. It's off the beaten track in central Turkmenistan and is about the size of a hockey rink. There are conflicting stories about its origins, though it's been described as part-natural phenomenon and part-industrial accident.
But President Serdar Berdymukhamedov now has a burning desire to seal the infernal attraction forever. Mike Armstrong explains how the inferno ignited, and why it's causing concern.
