Welcome back to Friday Music, everyone!
I'm pleased to present "Wakami' ".
On Monday, the peeps over on my Instagram chose a prompt for me to write music to, and this week the prompt was:
"If Guillermo del Toro made a movie about the Mayan Civilization set in present day".
I framed this story around an elderly woman recounting her family's ancestral history and the tragedies that plagued the Mayan people. I've always found del Toro's works striking and profound, so I wanted to grab as much rawness as I could and put it into this short "backstory".
This week's Friday Music was particularly fun for me because of my Guatemalan heritage. I've collected a few native Mayan instruments over the years, some passed down from my dad. I don't think I've ever explored this side of my history in this way, and I think it was a really rewarding experience.
And to those wondering, "Wakami' " means "today" in Kaqchikel, a Mayan dialect.
Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy this, and be sure to tune in to my Instagram next Monday to participate in the polls!
