At first I was a bit confused why Canon would allow this lens to focus so closely considering it was intended to be a standard "normal" 50mm equivalent lens, but I've found that capability useful. It's only 0.25x magnification so you won't be getting the close up capability of a true 1:1 macro lens, but this is still really useful when taking photo walks or other casual situations where you want to get a bit closer than a basic lens provides.
