A write in question about canonical tags: "We have a series of posts on a broad range subject with high volume searches and competition. Can we take the first posts in the series, and add a canonical tag to the last post in the series to avoid keyword cannibalization?"
My advice is leave the canonicals alone, as these are used to tell Google the definitive version of a page. Canonical tags should not be used to tell Google which page you believe "should" get the "ranking power" for a given keyword phrase. Canonical tags say, "This is the original and definitive version of this page".
Let the other posts in your series stand on their own merit. They are good posts! And they answer specific questions about information and how-to's. These can rank for longer tail keyword searches. Using canonical tags to point them towards one post in the series will not add any SEO ranking power to that target post.
