STORYLINE:
Pilgrims continued to arrive in Rome on Tuesday morning to pay their final respects to Pope John Paul II.
Overwhelmed by the flood of mourners, Rome authorities appealed to pilgrims to stagger their arrival in the city this week.
Crowds of mourners arriving at the city's main Termini station struggled to board buses to travel to St Peter's Square.
Free shuttle services are being provided from five points in the city to St. Peter's.
Rome is bracing for an unprecedented flow of pilgrims - some predict their numbers may match the city's own three million residents - in the days leading to Friday's funeral.
John Paul will be laid to rest with regal pageantry and in the presence of kings, presidents and prime ministers, alongside popes of centuries past near the traditional tomb of the first pope, St. Peter.
