"Ready to experience the power of cycling as a collective force? This video captures the essence of the Critical Mass bike ride – a vibrant, dynamic event that brings together cyclists of all levels to demand safer streets and celebrate the joy of two wheels. And not just cyclists but also rollerbladers, one-wheelers, e-Bikers, hand cyclists, etc.
After 30 years of watching from the sidelines from SW Oklahoma to Central Florida, I finally had the time and wherewithal to get myself over to a Critical Mass event, this one in St. Petersburg, FL, about an hour from home. With a ride start of 7:30 p.m., it's kind of late for this boomer but it was totally worth the trip...and I was home by 1030 p.m., so not too bad.
Critical Mass started as an advocacy outreach to make motorists more aware of cyclists and has since grown into an alternative transportation event that feels more social than awareness raising.
The whole thing is a vibe: from the lights and sounds: all genres of music were represented by all walks of life. Some were clearly regulars and most were locals. I'm curious how many drove an hour or more, like me, to participate. How many were Critical Mass virgins, like me?
This video is lightly edited so that you can be immersed in the Dec. 27, 2024, St. Pete Critical Mass but not spend an hour and half crawling around Downtown St. Pete at 8 mph.
