As part of the U.S. diplomatic mission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative’s commitment to ending gender-based violence, USASEAN conducted a special webinar with YSEALI guest speakers who have experience working in fighting against gender-based violence in Southeast Asia.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that starts on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on Human Rights Day. Activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 started this initative.
The global theme for the 2021 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is “Orange the world: End violence against women now!”
So many factors contribute to societies neglecting education related to human trafficking, of their inhabitants, including gender norms and sex stereotypes. Promoting education for everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, sexual orientation, creates dynamic, expanding opportunities, both economically and culturally.
Besides our U.S. Mission to ASEAN spokesperson, participants in this important conversation were:
Jirada Phetlam co-founded and manages Femnimitr, a cultural gender archive with a mission to drive a creative gender dialogue for policy change in Thailand. Nindy Voristya Wanda is a YSEALI Professional Fellow. She was born and raised in Palembang, South Sumatra. Nindy’s been an active advocate for women’s rights especially in the area of gender violence against women. She’s worked on gender issues for more than five years.
Especially in Indonesia where sexual and reproductive health rights are seen as taboo, she saw the needs of Indonesians to break the cultural barriers in order to learn more about these topics as a basic human right.
Through her work she has also provided pro bono legal assistance to victims through online consultation/counselling and legal assistance. She then accompanies victims in the legal process. Nindy is currently working as lawyer at Klik Law Firm.
Vuri Fitria submitted this powerful poem for YSEALI's ASEAN Appreciation contest
