On Sunday, thousands of people participated in the annual "Battle of the Oranges" by throwing oranges at one another in the northern Italian city of Ivrea. The historical Carnival of Ivrea, which dates back to 1808, included a food-fight. Teams of "Aranceri" (orange handlers) and "Tiranni" engage in an orange war (Tyrants). One hypothesis claims that the battle's origins are a recreation of a struggle between Napoleonic troops and the inhabitants of Ivrea, with those on foot standing in for the residents and those in carts for the army.
