Companion Planting is all about introducing plants to your garden that will benefit the others. Two of the most common plant partners are basil and tomatoes, a combination many dutifully plant – but for what reason? Some say that the fragrant basil repels pests looking for tomatoes, others say that their match it is all about their perfect flavour combination at harvest. Could it ‘bee’ as simple as the flowering basil attracting pollinators for the tomatoes?
With one foot in the world of science and the other in long-held gardening practices, even folklore, the direct effect of one plant on another, or the action that it uses, can be debated. But there is no debating the benefit of biodiversity, and that's what Companion Planting is really all about.
