Welcome to the Twilight Trams event at the St Kilda Tramway Museum! Experience a night of nostalgia and wonder as these heritage trams light up and run under the stars. Join us for this special evening and dive into the rich history of Adelaide's tramway museum.
In January 1954, a group of Adelaide tram enthusiasts formed the local branch of the Australian Electric Traction Association, dedicated to promoting electric transport. By 1956, inspired by successful tramway museums in Sydney and Melbourne, the Adelaide group began efforts to preserve their own trams. This led to the creation of the Australian Electric Transport Museum (AETM) in Adelaide.
Initially, trams were stored at Morphettville Racecourse sidings and later moved to St Kilda. The Museum opened as a static display in 1967 and expanded with a 2km tramway line to St Kilda beach, officially opened in 1974. Today, the Museum houses over 26 trams and various other vehicles, preserved and operated entirely by dedicated volunteers.
