इस्लामिक कैलेंडर के हिसाब से वर्तमान में मुहर्रम का महीना चल रहा है. शिया मुसलमानों के लिए यह पूरी दुनिया में पवित्र माना जाता है जब पैगंबर मुहम्मद के पोते हुसैन की शहादत की स्मृति में बड़े जुलूस निकाले जाते हैं. हुसैन की शहादत सातवीं सदी में हुई थी. हालांकि अधिकारियों ने कश्मीर में 1990 से ही इन जुलूसों पर प्रतिबंध लगा रखा था.तीन दशकों से अधिक समय के बाद पहली बार, शियाओं ने श्रीनगर में 8वें मुहर्रम के जुलूस को कड़ी सुरक्षा व्यवस्था में निकाला. पैगम्बर मुहम्मद के पोते हज़रत इमाम हुसैन की जय-जयकार के बीच, सीना ठोककर और हज़रत इमाम हुसैन की स्तुति करते हुए, ऐतिहासिक जुलूस शहर के गुरु बाजार इलाके से शुरू हुआ जो बुदशाह चौक से होकर मौलाना आजाद रोड और फिर डलगेट से शांतिपूर्वक गुजरा.
