Machu Picchu is a 15th century inca site located on a ridge between the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains in Peru. It is situated 2430 meters (7,980 feet) above sea level on the Eastern slope of the Andes and overlooks the Urubamba River hundreds of feet below. The site was built in the classical Inca style, with polished dry-stone walls. Its three primary structures are the Inti-huatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. The site is surrounded by terraces carved into the mountain that were used for agriculture. Machu Picchu was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. More than 1 million people visit Machu Picchu each year. Terraced fields on the edge of the site were once used for growing crops, likely maize and potatoes.
